The lake is covered with an up to 1.5m thick layer of ice throughout winter. This enormous area of ice, surrounded by the high Baikal mountain range, the Bargusin mountains and the Sayan, serves for an ideal location for a winter bike tour. Easily accessable by train, an impressive landscape, free ride in all directions, and an unlimited reservoir of sweet water of high drinking quality in the shape of pure ice. Andreas Heßberg and Waltraud Schulze completed this unique winter expedition succesfully between January 26th and March 12th 2011.A report has now been published documenting all the details of this fantastic tour.
